a chicken character of mine
eh
he is used to cock fighting
A cruel sport and just as bad as dog fighting yet sadly twice as legal (as some countries is it actually considered cultural and even kids are brought up helping raise game cocks and discarding losers from a fight)

I was going to make him meet up with eyesore at some point hmmm.

swear next thing I upload will be something I'm supposed to be working on
but I love chickens though.

he has his crest and long feathers because he was not raised a game cock, he simply ends up being one through unfortunate circumstances, the experience hardens him though.

I love chickens, too! (I live in the country and I own many myself ;.;)
It really breaks my heart to hear that some people still do this illegally, especially in the deep south USA where I am :<

I was reading about cockfighting today, and I learned that most people who raise roosters for sport cut off their comb and wattle, called dubbing them so they won't have a disadvantage in a fight… But I love Noose's (if you've started calling him that yet) design all the same. XD Keep up the good work.

yeah, there is a reason that hasn't happened to him
he was used more as a cheaply bought training target for a rooster learning to fight at first.

(like in my preview video with him the other rooster does have his comb and wattle removed) :3

not as bad as what they do to tigers ten years ago there were over 100 000 now theres only about 5000 and in the next ten years you mention the word tiger to a chill and they will say "what is a tiger" because there wil be none left

yes it is as bad because unlike with tigers not a lot of people care, and cock fighting is still legal in many countries where as killing tigers is a crime

regardless you should'nt be little other animals just because they aren't your favorite
this is why cock fighting is still legal in places because no one cares enough...

XD; I'd love chickens, except that when I was raising chicks, I ended up in the hospital for double-lung pneumonia...

Allergic to live chickens.

Go figure.

Still wouldn't put a chicken in cock fights, they're still creatures. Great job on the design, I rather like it!

which is a misconception
they don't enjoy it they do it via instinct because tehy are bred to be agressive its all they know.
which is sad as chickens are actually really intellegent

Oh my goodness, I could never imagine putting my roosters through that. As much as your character is forced through a very sad hobby, and I'd like to go on about that, I must compliment the picture!
I am just in awe with how amazing you've drawn him. You capture a nice style for all types of birds. I see my hens and roosters every day and I'm not even close to drawing them this well. I especially love the tail feathers. AUGH, and this glorious piece of art is done in MS Paint once again as well! The shading and detail are just incredible!
I really adore this character already, I would love to see more of him! Hopefully happy or with Eyesore. x'3 Very nice as always, it really does look outstanding, and I am so happy to see you have a rooster character. >w<
I hope he can get a nice hen; though, you know, a pheasant came and flirted with my hens once, maybe it can work vice versa. :eyes: kiddingkidding

While I agree that cockfighting is a cruel and unnecessary sport, I highly doubt any rooster (even an anthropomorphized one) would find himself all that broken up about it. Roosters feckin' love tearing each other to shreds, it's why they're so easy to use in cockfighting. Once again, I am not condoning or supporting cockfighting in any way, shape, or form. I'm just saying... roosters are mean mo-fos.

well actually during fighting they are known to become very stressed, which is why half way through fighting they would show complacent behavior by pecking the ground and scratching it,having a break to lower stress levels.
the reason they fight so fiercely is because they are in a confined space naturally in the wild birds would intimidate one another and it wouldn't always lead to a fight because the less dominant male would retreat.

it is also possible to keep several male together in harmony so they are not so willing to fight as some may think.

but here is a nice little example of someone who keeps several roosters to prove my point : [link]

the fact is roosters trained to fight often have their crest cut, spurs chopped off and are given many steroids and other drugs , granted roosters do protect their own be it females of territory but there is more too them than that.

the sport is cruel because it forces them to fight to the death as a weaker male wouldnt be able to retreat or back off even if it wanted to. :c

He reminds me of my rooster Pochy who died.. :( I hate cock fighting, it's wrong and just a terrible thing to make those poor birds do!

(I'm gona rant a bit here) Another thing I hate just as bad as dog/cock fighting and animal abuseis factory farms. He was raised to be a meat chicken and luckily we got him before they could kill him (as he was a school project). He only lived to be three, but it was three years he wouldn't have gotten otherwise...

My family faught chickens when I was growing up. I was one of those kids that helped my dad during the fights. It wasnt traumatic to me but I did learn a lot about chickens, how to care for them and doctor them after fights. I now raise chickens as an adult, but dont fight them. I have rare breeds that lay brick red eggs and blue green eggs.
Chickens, no matter the breed, loves to fight, if you dont seperate the roosters they will kill each other. Its not something that's forced or trained into them. I have to keep all my roosters seperated in different pens despite the fact that they are not fighting chickens. The only horrible thing about chicken fights is the knives they put on the legs called Gaffs. Other then that the owners take very good care of the birds to make sure they are in top condition to win.

(going to copy this from a post I sent to another deviant art member so it may not be so direct but it proves my point):

the fact of the matter is no animal 'loves to fight' when animals fight they always do it with a reason behind it
be is reproduction or other needs such as food and territory
in the Wild animals almost never fight to the death as their is always an escape option. no animal wants to risk injury and fights can often be settled by displaying not fighting.

Well Im going to point out a few errors in your ways so dont take this personal as an attack or anything I just want to show you where your wrong and why. Im a very reasonable person and dont pick fights or look for them. I just want to make sure a negative light is not unnecessarily casted on someone or a type of person. I dont fight them so Im not defending myself, this is all knowledge gathered over many years of my life through experience not word of mouth or something I read online.
The link you provided was interesting none the less but there's a few things you over looked and misread. The person does not keep them all in one pen together. There's photos of many different pens there on that link, and they have stated that peace is not kept simply by keeping them together in one pen. They have had mishaps and many issues from what I've read. A lot of the times, people will hatch some birds together and after they can tell that what's what, as far as hen and roosters are concerned then they will instantly think the roosters all getting along is a break-through or something. However it takes a year before those birds will start becoming manly enough to fight. For a whole year they will coexist with out any problems. And some breeds are more peaceful then others so less problems will arise but they will eventually always arise. Birds with more of a wide open environment will some times run during a fight and escape, but eventually they wont be able to run any more and die. The other chicken, the dominate one will kill the runner. When fighting, if a chicken runs, its called "hacked out" and is removed from the fight instantly and is considered the looser. A hacked bird will not fight back even if its near death, it will stick its nose in a corner and lay there till its killed, so the people who own the bird will not put it through that till death, they will simply stop the fight and consider it a loss. Also they are not forced into a cage to fight, most the time its in a large room, with plenty of room to run, after all you dont want the fight to be uninteresting. The birds need room to fly, duck, dive and move freely, or else neither person entering the birds into the fight will have a fair chance of winning. If the bird cant move freely during the fight its just a waste of time and money. What you dont understand, is that people do not simply fight them for fun, they put thousands of dollars into these birds, and do not want them to be killed due to poor health, improper handling during a fight, or forcing a bird that doesnt want to fight to fight. Most the time the birds dont even fight to the death. Like sword fighting or boxing there's times when you call off the fight, throw in the towel. If your bird is hurt too bad you quickly remove it and salvage your prized bird. Cause you paid hundreds and thousands even for that bird and spent years raising and caring for it.
One of my dad's birds got loose up here and it wasnt even conditioned for fighting, we're talking about something that happened just one week or so ago, after he's retired from that way of life. He had just one bird out in the back yard, it got loose, went a couple houses up where some guy had chickens in a few cages and on tie cords in his back yard, and my dad's bird killed every single bird up there in one day's time. No one caged him, no one forced him, no one pumped him with roids or meds, it is natural behavior and the bird will do it with no one's help.

sorry if this reply seems rushed and a little unorganized I am kept for time right now but wanted to get this out of the way:

You seem to be confusing natural behaviour with nurtured behaviour. Birds that are kept for fights often can't be rehomed and once rescued are often put down. Whereas there are plenty of roosters even of the fighting breed kept in groups at rescue centres, these are birds usually not raised together. aggressive behaviour if nurtured will become a dominant trait in a bird just like in dog fighting the dogs raised to fight will often be put down for the same reason as game cocks because they will only show aggression to male adversaries as it is what they are raised to do and what they are rewarded for.

Simply putting a bird in a fight is conditioning enough after a while and the link example I shared was just one off the bat the person also mentioned that she kept the males together after they matured.

I'd also like to note that my knowledge isn’t simply word of mouth or internet based I do have quite a bit of experience working with roosters among other animals as the previous course I took was in animal management and was of a fairly high level.
Chickens and roosters were actually one of our subjects in animal psychology for a while.

You cannot compare cock fighting to a human sport because in a human sport both combatants have a choice to be there and a choice to call it quits.

also it should be noted that in the wild chickens can actually get quite a bit of lift with unclipped wings and can escape attackers through height, it is known that wild chickens will roost in the low branches of trees.

At the end of the day it’s illegal in most countries for a reason
Forcing animals to fight and die for human amusement is not natural
And like I've noted several times in the wild they would not fight to the death unless extremely evenly matched but I'll stop there on risk of repeating myself.

Though the discomplacent behaviour should be evidence enough that it is highly stressful for the animal and it should be noted taht if you care for an animal then you wouldnt want to put it in a situation where it could be killed or seriously injured.

at the end of the day there is nothing you can say taht will make me believe cock fighting is a fair and natural sport
just as much as no one will convnce me dog fighting is a fair and natural sport.

my knowlege of animal behaviour and morals will not allow it
so lets just agree to dissagree

Next to the russain orthodox church thats near where I live there is a weird red building (much like a house) and it looks old, I hear chickens getting hurt whenever I walk by it. My dad said that they cock fight because he went inside, but he left quickly because it was too heartbreaking. I think someone reported them. I don't hear the chickens anymore.
