A photo of my dumbo rat Loki

again with my new camera so you can see all his details.

her is a silvered Berkshire in colour but you cant see his white chest or socks here, or his li'l tail tip.
Ben has a lot more white on him than Loki.

They are both running around on my bed right now while I type this , they are such cuties :3

females do get a lot of tumours, but if you spay them it reduces the risk of them getting them by loads!

alternatively male rats aren't prone to tumours at all, so you could always get two males :3

Thanks! That's great to know!
Should you get rats in pairs? or just have one?

you should certainly get them in pairs if you can

in the wild rats live in big social groups and more experienced rat owners sometimes keep up to 19 rats! (crazy right)
3 is often recommended to help for when one rat passes since rats will become sad without company

but 2 is fine
I only own 2 myself.

they simply need each other for grooming and play fighting and snuggling up together on cold nights, basically the companionship a human cant offer.

but don't worry two rats will still be as tame as one :3

okay but your mum seems not very well informed
because its not cancer they are prone to?
its mammary tumors and that only effects female rats because they have mammary glands
thus upon spaying the risk lessons

and males don't have mammary glands which is why they do not get it.

guinea pig shouldn't be a problem i know some people let their rats play with their guinea pigs but I wouldn't recommend it unless you know what you are doing.

rats don't live very long with the oldest rats being 6 years and the average being 2-3

but the payoff is worth it.
unlike hamsters and mice
rats will learn to come when you all their names
they can be litter trained and can learn many tricking such as 'spin' give a paw' 'fetch' and even 'rollover' just look it up on you tube, some can learn some complicated stuff too!

they also love attention
